About Our Dentists
Dr. Zar has been practicing dentistry for over 20 years, his gentle demeanor has translated into strong loyalty with both patients and staff. He is a graduate and previous faculty member of New York University, College of Dentistry where he earned his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree and advanced degree in Prosthodontics.
Dr. Darren Smolkin is our Endodontist and he earned his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree from McGill University and completed his graduate training in Endodontics (root canal therapy) from the University of Southern California.
Dr. Reza Malek is our Periodontist and he earned his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree from UCLA and certificate in Periodontics from Oregon Health Science University.
All of our Dental Specialists bring a wealth of valuable experience and knowledge to Tarzana Dental Care.

And if a referral is warranted in a certain situation we guide our patients to seek the appropriate care with a local specialist. The focus of the practice will always be to prevent and when necessary treat disease. Periodontal (gum) disease and dental caries remain an epidemic in our country and throughout the world. Periodontal disease in adults and dental caries in children are very common “diseases” affecting each population respectively. One involves bacterial destruction of the gums while the other allows acids and bacteria to decay away tooth structure. Unfortunately, both diseases get minimized and are accepted as a form of “normal”. The reality is that bleeding gums and dental decay are far from normal and in the vast majority of cases are easily preventable.
Dental health however does require having some regular habits like brushing daily, flossing regularly, seeing a hygienist / dentist on a consistent basis and limiting acids and sugars in the daily diet to main meal times as much as possible.

Emergency Dentistry
Dental emergencies can happen due to accident or injury, but they can also result from a failure to visit the dentist on a routine basis. If you are hurting or have had an accident, it is important that you receive treatment right away.
Whatever the cause, Dr. Zar will do his utmost to see you the same day and relieve you of any pain. At Tarzana Dental Care, we provide personalized follow-up care. Dr. Zar personally calls his patients after treatment to make sure they are still comfortable and satisfied with the treatment they received.
Delaying dental treatment only increases the risk of more significant damage later, and can result in the need for lengthy and more expensive treatment down the road. If you are in pain, have lost a filling or have broken a tooth, we encourage you to call our office immediately.

Do You Have a Dental Emergency?
Here are some key considerations during a dental emergency, plus some simple steps you can take to minimize pain immediately.
Toothache: Rinse your mouth out with warm water. Call us at 818-708-3232, and we will make sure that you are seen right away.
Bitten Lip or Tongue: Clean the area and apply an ice pack to reduce swelling. If the bleeding doesn't stop, come into our office to see Dr. Zar right away.
Broken Tooth: Save any pieces of the broken tooth and rinse your mouth out with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the area to decrease swelling and pain, and come in to see Dr. Zar immediately.
Knocked Out Tooth: Gently rinse off the knocked out tooth without removing any attached tissue. If possible, hold the tooth in place in the socket. Otherwise, put the tooth in a glass of milk. Come in to see Dr. Zar immediately.
Object Stuck in Teeth: If you're unable to dislodge an object with dental floss, call our office at 818-708-3232 for an emergency appointment.
Lost Dental Filling or Dental Crown: Call us at 818-708-3232 for an emergency appointment.
Dental Abscess: If you notice a painful, pimple-like swelling on your gums, rinse with salt water and immediately contact us at 818-708-3232. Dental abscesses can lead to more serious infections if not treated promptly.
